Just wondering if anyone had any stats on Bully breed attacks by race? Example how many African American owners or victims were attacked compared to Latin American owners or victims etc.

  Carol Miller Many African Americans are mauled or killed by pit bulls. DBO has a year end wrap up for fatalities and photos are included. The recent ruling that awarded a million dollars for a pit bull mauling was for an African American girl.

  Weldon Smith I would think based on the profiles of the people we combat within the groups and because of the pure ignorant denial by a majority of Caucasian owners that their rate would be highest. Observation within the Hispanic culture of owning for machismo seems to be the least because they dont live in a fantasy world about what they own and try to deny it. Most African Americans I have witnessed dont own or care to own these type dogs other than young men who thinks it improves their tough guy image. I think its an excellent question to ask Amber. Also we always hear people including pit owners blaming gangstas and rap stars for pibbles bad reputation...my opinion on that is if they are into illegal activity and own them to combat law enforcement, they too are very aware of what they own and what they are used for...the denial by any person regarrdless of anything makes me disgusted.

  Madaleine Kempinski Amber if you go into the dogsbite.org website and search victims of each year you will see African American victims. The number is lower than Caucasians.

  Christy Cornell Madeline, good suggestion to Amber, but with one caveat. You may be correct about looking at the pictures on DBO for the death stats since all deaths are posted there along with pictures and descriptions of the deceased or at least links to that information, but many non-fatal ( but still serious) mauling attacks are not posted there. Simply too many for Colleen to keep up with on a website when she has so many other irons in the fire. That's why considering Merrit's statistics is also important. He keeps that data when it involves finding reports of as many attacks as possible. Amber needs to consider both DBO and Merrit's statistics when trying to collect the information she mentioned.

  Madaleine Kempinski Situations like mine are also in a category all their own. I was mauled by a wolfhound/pit mix while working as a vet tech (the dog was out for his morning walk - he was being boarded for a shelter), and I knew how to protect my neck. If I didn't have that knowledge, i would be one more statistic.

  Earl Upham I honestly don't think it matters what race anyone is. When these dogs go off they could care less what you are. When they snap they just want to kill whatever it is that they decide to attack whether it be the loving hand t hat feeds them or not. If you love your cat don't get one of these killer dogs.

They were frequently used in lynchings in the early 20th century. Not many black people had them before the 1980s. Since then, though, the combination of inexperienced owners with large families in small homes has been devastating to much of the black community, especially since pit bulls also tend to be used by gangsters & druggies as adjuncts to their other exploitative activities.
